NEW YORK — Oscar-winning scribe Ruth Prawer Jhabvala will be honored with the NBC Screenwriter Tribute at the eighth Nantucket Film Festival, running June 19-22.
“Ruth Prawer Jhabvala considers herself primarily a novelist and not a screenwriter, so it should come as no surprise that her screenwriting has tackled great works of literature by authors like Henry James and E.M. Forster,” said Nantucket artistic director Mystelle Brabbee, who announced the award with exec director Jill Goode.
Previous recipients of the NBC tribute include Jay Presson Allen, Paul Schrader, Walter Bernstein, Ring Lardner Jr. and James Schamus.
Awarded the screenplay Oscar for her adaptations of Forster’s “A Room With a View” and “Howard’s End,” Prawer Jhabvala is best known for her work with producer-director team Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, who will present the award during the Massachusetts island event.
Upcoming for the scribe is “Le Divorce,” directed by Ivory and starring Kate Hudson, Naomi Watts, Glenn Close and Stockard Channing. Fox Searchlight will release the pic July 16.
The Nantucket fest’s screenwriting focus extends to a writing competition, mentorship program, panel discussions and staged readings.
