Mouse sez ‘Uncle’ to pitch

Pic paints trolls as misunderstood outcasts

The Walt Disney Studios have bought the feature pitch “Uncle Stiltskin” from TV scribes and showrunners Bill and Cheri Steinkellner, a take-off on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale about Rumplestiltskin.

“Uncle” picks up where the Grimm fairy tale left off, but does so with a different perspective on the troll with the funny name: Instead of being scary child-nappers, the trolls are simply misunderstood outcasts discriminated against for their magical abilities as well as their bad teeth. Says Cheri Steinkellner, “We thought the original was crazily unfair to trolls.”

Having failed to acquire a child by spinning straw into gold, Uncle Stiltskin winds up playing parent to a wild young orphan girl raised by wolves. While he discovers this is considerably harder than he first thought, he also learns the true meaning of family.

The Steinkellners most recently created the ABC and Toon Disney animated show “Teacher’s Pet,” which they also turned into a feature to be released theatrically next February. That pic features voices from Nathan Lane and Kelsey Grammer.

The APA-repped pair are best known for their work as former staff writers on “Cheers,” which ran on NBC from 1982 to 1993, and which they exec produced starting in 1989.
