‘Lou,’ ‘Past’ prized at Malibu Film Fest

'Family,' 'Dream,' 'Nihi' also nab jury prizes

The feature films “Lou,” directed by Bret Carr, and “After the Past,” directed by Ash Adams, drew top honors Wednesday at the Malibu Intl. Film Festival, taking the best picture prizes in the juried and audience arenas, respectively.

Event’s mantra is to focus on undiscovered cutting-edge films and filmmakers.

The fourth annual fest, which wraps today, bestowed four juried and three audience nods.

Other juried winners are “Family Tree,” Vicky Jenson (live action short); “Dreamscapes,” Sean McBride (animated short); and “Nihi,” Brooks Guyer (docu).

Taking home the other audience prizes were “Valette,” Susan Vail (live action short); and “The Freak,” Aristomenis Tsirbas (animated short).

Winning pics, pooled from seven feature films, 10 documentaries and 33 shorts, will screen today at the New Malibu Theater. Fest saw 3,000 submissions this year.
