‘Lost Boys’ finds scribe Nagle

Silberling to helm pic about Sudanese war orphans

Paramount has tapped screenwriter Margaret Nagle to pen “Lost Boys,” centered on the journey of refugees from Sudan’s civil war to the U.S.

Project, set up with Bobby Newmyer’s Outlaw Prods. and Brad Silberling’s Reveal Entertainment, is based on a “60 Minutes II” segment last year on the fate of thousands of orphaned boys — aged 7 to 11 — who survived after their villages burned during Sudan’s civil war in 1988. Hundreds died along a treacherous route to a refugee camp in Kenya; many of the survivors have come to the U.S. in recent years.

“Often, the boys were out tending flocks when their villages were destroyed, then they’d see a column of hundreds of other boys like themselves,” said Silberling, who is also signed on to direct.

Silberling also said Nagle is fashioning the project as “an intimate epic” by focusing on a small group of refugees at the start of their journey and concluding more than a decade later with their attempts to assimilate into American life. He stressed that Par execs moved especially quickly to hire Nagle following her pitch meetings.

Damon Lee is also producing.

Nagle is a former thesp (“My So-Called Life”) and producer. She wrote the spec screenplay “Warm Springs,” about Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s paralysis from the waist down at the age of 39.

Nagle was repped in her deal by UTA and attorney David Matlof.
