Laffer ‘Rice’ serving up Chang, Yan

Thesp, chef team up for helmer's debut

HONG KONG — Sylvia Chang (“Forever and Ever,” “Eat Man Drink Woman”) will star alongside TV chef Martin Yan (“Yan Can Cook”) in a first-time feature written and directed by Kenneth Bi.

The $1 million comedy “Hainan Chicken Rice” (working title) will start shooting Nov. 11 in Singapore, where the story is set.

Game of ‘Chicken’

Pic revolves around a conservative single mother and restaurant owner who raises her three sons using her mother’s secret Hainan chicken rice recipe. Concerned that her youngest son might be gay, Chang takes in a French female exchange student, who teaches the family important lessons in life.

Producers are Hong Kong’s Kenbiroli Films and Singapore’s Ground Glass Images. Pic is backed by JCE Movies, the Singapore Film Commission and a group of private equity investors. Australia’s Arclight Films is the sales agent.

“Hainan Chicken Rice” was selected as an official project by the Pusan Film Festival’s financing forum, the Pusan Promotion Plan, in 2000.
