'Gold' takes first as 'Architect' nabs docu nod

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi’s film “Crimson Gold” picked up top prize at this year’s Chicago Film Festival, which wrapped Thursday.

Second prize went to Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan for his film “Distant.”

Best docu feature kudos went to Nathaniel Kahn’s “My Architect,” about the filmmaker’s father, architect Louis Kahn. The film also received an audience nod.

Second docu prize was awarded to Kim Bartley and Donnacha O’Briain’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” about the brief overthrow of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez’s in 2002.

Two French thesps were recognized for their performances: Ludivine Sagnier in Claude Miller’s “La Petite Lili,” and Pierre Boulanger in Francois Dupeyron’s “Monsieur Ibrahim.”

Manuel Claro was bestowed kudos for his cinematography in Christoffer Boe’s “Reconstruction,” which also picked up best first film prize at Cannes.

New directors competition gave top prize to Jerome Bonnell for his film “Olga’s Chignon.”

Peter Hedges was also given a new directors nod for “Pieces of April” and also picked up the top audience choice award.

Best short film kudos went to Philippe Barcinski’s “The Open Window,” while Mervi Junkkonen’s “Barbeiros” picked up student film kudos.

Fest gave career tributes throughout October to director Robert Benton and thesps Robert Downey Jr. and Taye Diggs, as well as one earlier in summer to Nicolas Cage.
