Mark Wahlberg is being fitted for the lead role in “The Jacket,” a drama that is coming together as a co-production between Section Eight and Mandalay.
They are courting British helmer John Maybury, who directed “Love Is the Devil.” George Clooney, Steven Soderbergh and Peter Guber will produce.
None of the deals is set yet, but this drama could shape up as an inaugural release of Warner Bros.’ anticipated classics division. There is no deal with WB.
Wahlberg gets to show his chops in the drama. He will play a soldier who has been convicted of a murder and believes he’s traveling through time.
The script was written by Marc Rocco (“Murder in the First”), and Massy Tadjedin.
Wahlberg next appears alongside Edward Norton in the Paramount remake “The Italian Job.” He also co-stars with Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Jason Schwartzman, Lily Tomlin, Dustin Hoffman and Catherine Deneuve in David O. Russell’s “I Love Huckabees,” an ensemble comedy that begins shooting this summer after taking root with Fox Searchlight and Michael Kuhn’s Qwerty Films. Wahlberg and Russell previously worked together on “3 Kings.”
