‘In America’ wins Flanders festival

Sheridan takes top award

BRUSSELS — Irish helmer Jim Sheridan’s “In America” scooped the Grand Prize worth $29,000 at the 30th Flanders Intl. Film Festival in Ghent on Saturday.

Vanessa Redgrave presented the prize to producer Arthur Lappin. Sheridan is in the U.S. ahead of the film’s November release.

The international jury, headed by thesp Jeanne Moreau, gave the $17,500 Georges Delerue Award for music to “La Pornographie,” by Jan Jakub Kolski, and the script prize to Bent Hamer for “Kitchen Stories.” The Robert Wise Prize for director was awarded to Im Songsoo for “A Good Lawyer’s Wife.”

The awards were made at the closing event of the fest, where Oscar winner Nicola Piovani conducted a concert of film scores he has composed for Italian directors such as the Taviani brothers, Federico Fellini, Nanni Moretti and Roberto Benigni.
