First Run chows down on ‘Animation’ horror

Hancock's latest was aud hit at indie, horror fests

NEW YORK — First Run Features has acquired all North American rights to director John Hancock’s cannibal chiller “Suspended Animation,” which the Gotham-based niche distrib will open in key U.S. cities on Halloween.

An audience hit on the independent and horror fest circuit, the fright pic focuses on a Hollywood animator stranded in the snowbound northern Michigan hills who unwisely seeks refuge with a pair of flesh-eating psycho-sisters.

The film takes veteran helmer Hancock back to his genre roots in psychological horror with pics like 1971 cult classic “Let’s Scare Jessica to Death.”

“I’m so pleased to have such a distinguished director with so fine a body of work allow us to release his scary and funny new film,” said First Run prexy Seymour Wishman.

First Run will bow “Suspended Animation” on Oct. 31 in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, expanding into other markets in the following weeks.

The subject of a 2001 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art for its contribution in over 20 years of independent film distribution, First Run currently has Italian director Matteo Garrone’s dark love triangle pic “The Embalmer” in release.
