Export board Catalan Films is getting a makeover.
Beginning in June, the promotion company will be restructured to incorporate Catalan pubcaster Televisio de Catalunya, Catalan export board Copca and the region’s two producers associations.
TVC and Copca will boost Catalan Films’ budget, says Jordi Penas, director general of the government’s Catalan Institute of Cultural Industries.
Catalan Films will be charged with the mission of organizing screenings in Barcelona, Penas adds.
Catalan Films, Spanish export board ICEX and producers’ lobby Fapae are also in talks to share an exhibition space at future film and TV marts.
The strengthening of Catalan Films coincides with a growth in the number, ambitions and breadth of prodcos based on the Catalan capital of Barcelona. They range from English-lingo specialists such as Filmax, MediaPro or ABS Production, co-producer of Cannes comp player “The Tulse Luper Suitcases”; to more maverick players such as Fresdeval, producers of Directors Fortnight screener, “Las horas del dia”; and Eddie Saeta, which had Marc Recha’s “Les mains vuid” in Un Certain Regard.
