‘Ella’ trio regroups

Producers shopping WWI book 'Nutcracker'

Three of the producers behind Miramax Films’ forthcoming family pic, “Ella Enchanted,” have reteamed to bring another prize-winning kids book to the screen.

Jane Startz Prods., TurtleBack Prods. and Irish shingle Octagon Films will produce “Lord of the Nutcracker Men,” from a novel by Iain Lawrence.

Screenwriter David Magee is penning the script.

Startz and Octagon principals, James Flynn and Morgan O’Sullivan, will produce. The three recently wrapped production on “Ella Enchanted,” which was shot in Ireland. Also on board to produce “Nutcracker” is TurtleBack topper Howard Meltzer.

The producers expect to secure more than 50% of the financing overseas, and will shop the pic to domestic distributors when the script is complete.

Lawrence’s novel focuses on a young British boy whose woodcarver father is shipped off to fight in WWI.

When his father sends him hand-carved wooden soldiers from the front lines, the boy comes to believe that the games he plays with the soldiers are connected to the real-life casualties on the battlefield.

Magee was repped by the Gersh Agency and KeyLight Entertainment.
