Cruise/Wagner spark to ‘Fire’

Shingle options 'Forgotten Disaster' book

Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner’s C/W Prods. is developing the story of the cataclysmic 1947 industrial accident in Texas City, Texas, which led to the first civil class action suit against the U.S. government.

The shingle has optioned Bill Minutaglio’s book “City on Fire: The Forgotten Disaster That Devastated a Town and Ignited a Landmark Legal Battle.” It’s a detailed portrait of the coastal town, which was virtually leveled by the explosion of two ships carrying a huge cargo of ammonium nitrate. Close to 700 people died.

The catastrophe’s survivors successfully sued the government for negligence.

C/W Prods., which has a first-look deal at Paramount, optioned the book using its discretionary fund. It’s not yet clear whether Cruise is considering an acting role in the project.

Minutaglio, repped by Writers & Artists and DHS Literary, is also the author of “First Son: George W. Bush and the Bush Family Dynasty.”
