Valerie Horwitz has been tapped to adapt the Jane Stanton Hitchcock novel “Social Crimes” for Phoenix Pictures, with Joel Schumacher eyeing the project as a directing vehicle.
“Crimes” revolves around a New York socialite who plots revenge against a social climber who killed her husband and dethroned her from her high society life.
Miramax Books published the novel in June 2002. Phoenix optioned the book that November, with Schumacher attached to develop the thriller. He next helms “The Phantom of the Opera” for Warner Bros.
Phoenix exec veep of production Matt Bierman is overseeing the project at the company.
A newcomer to screenwriting, Horwitz most recently worked in San Francisco as a lawyer.
The scribe will receive low six figures for her work. She’s repped by Mission Management.
