Cannes docu studies ‘8½’

Pic to be shown out of competition

ROME — Mario Sesti will unspool “L’Ultima Sequenza” (The Last Sequence), a 55-minute documentary that uncovers a previously unknown alternative last scene to Federico Fellini’s “8 ½,” at the Cannes Film Festival next month.

The legendary Italo director who created “La Dolce Vita,” “La Strada” and other classics will be subject of a major retrospective at the festival that marks the 10th anniversary of his death.

Sesti’s docu celebrates the 40th anniversary of “8 ½,” gleaning hours of never-before used interviews with the master filmmaker and more than 3,000 photographs snapped backstage.

The uncovered final scene shows all the film’s characters together in the restaurant car of a train. This would have substituted the actual circus-like final scene.

The documentary is expected to be shown out of competition or in Un Certain Regard sidebar.
