‘Adam’ begats fest

'Splendor' will close Edinburgh in August

LONDON — Ewan McGregor starrer “Young Adam” and Sundance hit “American Splendor,” starring Paul Giamatti will bookend the 57th Edinburgh Intl. Film Festival (Aug. 13- 24).

“Young Adam,” the adaptation of the Alexander Trocchi novel, is the second feature from Scottish helmer David Mackenzie, whose debut “Last Great Wilderness” had its world preem in last year’s program.

The theme of this year’s fest is “The New Europe,” chosen by artistic director Shane Danielson as “a response to external events and a focus for discussion and contemplation.”

Of the more than 100 pics screening, 23 examine displacement, national identity and war, including works by Belarusian dissident doc maker Viktor Dashuk and Hungarian filmmaker Miklos Jancso.

‘River’ flows at fest

Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River,” Gregor Jordan’s “Ned Kelly,” Francois Ozon’s “Swimming Pool,” Jim Sheridan’s “In America” and Macaulay Culkin clubbing pic “Party Monster” will screen in the Festival Gala section.

Seven Brit pics get world preems: Simon Cellan Jones period drama “Eroica,” Alison Peeble’s “Afterlife,” Duncan Finnigan’s “Four Eyes,” Charles de Meaux’s “Schimkent Hotel,” Chris Cooke’s “One for the Road,” Paul Morrisson’s cricket comedy “Wondrous Oblivion” and Richard Jobson’s debut, “16 Years of Alcohol.”

Other highlights include Mike Hodges’ eagerly awaited follow-up to “Croupier,” “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead,” which again stars Clive Owen, and a series of “Reel Life” interviews with filmmakers including Peter Greenaway, Jim Sheridan and Richard LaGravenese.
