‘Abyss’ looms large at weekend box office

Paxton starrer discovers $14,520 per location

HOLLYWOOD — James Cameron’s Titanic-research docu “Ghosts of the Abyss” produced lively biz at the giant-screen box office this weekend.

Released by Disney in association with Walden Media, “Ghosts” grossed $1.4 million from 97 theaters, or a full-bodied $14,520 per location. Cameron-helmed pic stars Bill Paxton and depicts efforts of a scientific research team at the site of the ship’s wreckage.

“(Cameron’s) vision and ingenuity permeated every step of this film’s journey to the bigscreen, and we are thrilled that it has been such a success,” Disney distrib prexy Chuck Viane said. “This film has been an exploration into the future of filmmaking.”

Cameron developed a special underwater camera system to capture the 3D “Ghost” images. Venues showing the pic include both Imax-format auditoriums and specially retrofitted 35mm theaters.
