Zwick clicks with ‘Samurai’

Helmer sees similarities with ancient warriors

At Saturday afternoon’s Variety-sponsored screening of “The Last Samurai,” helmer Ed Zwick likened his role to the Japanese warrior tradition depicted in the period tale toplined by Tom Cruise.

“I will say I always thought the job of directing is the job of a samurai,” Zwick said during the Q&A following the pic’s unspooling.

“You have to pick your battles, and sometimes you have to fall on your sword.”

Pete Hammond moderated the Egyptian sesh, latest in the Variety Screening Series.
