‘Square’ corners 14 Oz AFI noms

'Japanese Story' gets 10 nods, 'Ned Kelly' nine

SYDNEY– Crime caper “Gettin’ Square” nabbed 14 noms in the Australian Film Institute’s 2003 AFI awards Friday, equalling the record set in 1978 by director Phil Noyce’s “Newsfront.”

Also in strong contention are outback road movie “Japanese Story” with 10 nods and bushranger tale “Ned Kelly,” with nine.

Trophies will be handed out Nov. 21 at Her Majesty’s Theater in Melbourne and aired on pubcaster ABC-TV.

“Gettin’ Square” and “Japanese Story” will vie for film honors along with gritty drama “Alexandra’s Project” and coming-of-age saga “The Rage in Placid Lake.”

Up for lead actor are Heath Ledger (“Ned Kelly”), Timothy Spall and David Wenham (“Gettin’ Square”) and Gotaru Tsunashima (“Japanese Story”).

In the running for actress are Toni Collette (“Japanese Story”), Helen Buday (“Alexandra’s Project”), Rose Byrne (“Placid Lake”) and Susie Porter (“Teesh and Trude”).

Director candidates are Jonathan Teplitzky (“Gettin’ Square”), Gregor Jordan (“Ned Kelly”), Sue Brooks (“Japanese Story”) and Paul Maloney (“Crackerjack”).
