The shy, lonely-hearted suburbanites in “The Station Agent” might have felt more comfortable in a Regal Cinemas multiplex and dive bar in Hoboken than the ritzy Walter Reade Theater and ultra-sleek Time Lounge, which hosted Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei, Candice Bergen, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Sidney Lumet at a screening and party for the Miramax film Tuesday.
And though they didn’t show it, perhaps the stars would have , too.
Helmer-scribe Tom McCarthy shot the film in and around Newfoundland, New Jersey’s train depot, which inspired the film after he discovered it growing up in nearby New Providence. Shoot was also a homecoming for stars Peter Dinklage (Morristown) and Bobby Cannavale (Jersey City), who bonded along with thesp Patricia Clarkson for 20 days in their Howard Johnson motel.
“I got a lot of Jersey folks here tonight,” said McCarthy, who as a kid would pick his dad up every night when he got off the train. “No other way to get to New York.”
