Pic rakes up $107 in opening week

XXX” generated sales of $107 million in its opening week at homevideo stores, with DVD accounting for $90 million.

Another $16.56 million was spent on renting the Vin Diesel starrer, according to VSDA VidTrac.

Five million copies of the DVD were sold in its first week, distributor Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment reported. Wal-Mart alone sold 1 million copies, according to industry sources, and Revolution says Hollywood Video is calling “XXX” the best three-day rental ever for the chain.

The video hit store shelves on New Year’s Eve. Col promoted the release at college football bowl games and other sporting events to attract some of the action flick’s core fans.

Studios used to stay away from major video releases during the holidays. But in 2001, Universal Studios Home Video release “The Fast and the Furious” sold 2.9 million DVDs in its first week on shelves the week after Christmas.

Retailers are also happy with initial sales of MGM’s “Barbershop,” released Jan. 1; Lion hasn’t released first-week numbers on “Barbershop.”
