Vidgame euphoria at convention

G4 event to celebrate creators and fans

A busy, if not booked-full, calendar of events honoring the burgeoning vidgame business has added another entry with the announcement by cabler G4’s CEO Charles Hirschorn that it will sponsor a street celebration and awards ceremony in Hollywood on July 30.

The G-Phoria event will include musical acts, game stations and the first Glow Awards, part of a two-hour bloc of programming for G4, a Comcast-owned channel launched last year that is devoted to the vidgame business.

G-phoria events will be the centerpiece of a series of related shows, including five 30-minute specials leading up to the G-Phoria event, weekly segments, a wrap-up special in August and a pre-show special to air in May.

“G-Phoria is our way of celebrating the lifestyle that helped create G4,” Hirschorn said. “By making G-Phoria our signature event of the year, we’re celebrating the innovation and hard work of videogame creators. It’s the ultimate party designed to appeal to gamemakers, their fans and our viewers.”

Fans will pick Glow Award winners through online voting from nominees in 23 categories, including game of the year, best soundtrack and hottest character. Nominees will be announced during the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, held in mid-May in Los Angeles.

The programming will be sponsored by vidgame retailer EB Games. G4 is currently in 9 million homes served by Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, Insight and Mediacom cable systems.

Another cable outlet, TNN, announced more than a month ago that it would hold its own vidgame awards show in the fall. That would join more established awards programs such as the Interactive Achievement Awards run by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences and held last Thursday in Las Vegas, and the Game Developers Choice Awards, which are part of this month’s Game Developers Conference in San Jose.
