‘Seabiscuit’ DVD out of gate quickly

Horse racing drama on track to outsell U's '8 Mile'

“Seabiscuit” sold 5 million video units in its first six days and raked in more than $80 million in consumer spending, Universal Studios Home Video said Monday.

The performance puts “Seabiscuit” on pace to be the bestselling drama title in 2003, topping another Universal pic, “8 Mile.” The studio initially shipped nearly 5.5 million units of “Seabiscuit,” more than 80% on DVD.

The title premiered Dec. 16 and sold about 2.5 million units its first day, the studio said last week.

“Seabiscuit” received Golden Globe nominations last week for picture and supporting actor in a drama (William H. Macy).

“This is certainly a film that audiences loved, and we were confident it would be just as enthusiastically embraced on DVD,” USHV president Craig Kornblau said in a statement.
