Online DVD rental outlet Netflix has announced that it has attained 1 million subscribers, beating its own estimates of when it would reach that milestone.

The company rents DVDs on a subscription basis; most customers pay about $20 a month for the privilege of keeping three DVDs at a time. There are no late fees, and Netflix uses a simple, prepaid mailer to speed delivery and return of discs.

Netflix execs credited their decision last year to open a series of regional distribution centers around the country, cutting turnaround times for most customers down to about one day, as a major factor in the rising subscription levels.
