Distribs from around the world tucked into an exotic spread at Miramax’s annual Cannes lunch Friday at the Majestic Beach.
Miramax saluted its all-time top grosser, “Chicago” and, in a new development, presented Box Office Awards of Excellence to distribs achieving record grosses in their respective territories.
These included Buena Vista Intl. in the U.K. (a gross of more than $26 million for “Chicago”) and Japan’s Gaga Communications (more than $22 million for “Shaolin Soccer”).
The company also presented an admissions award to TFM/France for achieving in excess of 1 million admissions in France for “Chicago.”
After thanking the distribs, Miramax co-topper Harvey Weinstein said international grosses of “City of God” were strong, but pic deserves another shot: Company plans an Oscar-season re-release and he urged distribs not to release it on video yet.
