Technology demo morphed into Oscar-nommed short
Kicking off a program of Academy Award-winning features available for sale, online movie service Movielink will offer a free download beginning today of Sony’s Oscar-nominated animated short “The ChubbChubbs.”
Pic was initially created by Sony Pictures effects house Imageworks as a technology demonstration, but it then morphed into a full-fledged short. It ultimately debuted in theaters paired with last summer’s “Men in Black 2” and also was included on that movie’s DVD. It is one of five finalists for this year’s Oscar for animated short and has won several other animation and film festival awards.
The Movielink premiere is the first time “The ChubbChubbs” will be available as a legal online download. It opens a Movielink showcase of Oscar-winning films available for downloading online at prices ranging from $2.95 to $4.95. Films include “Braveheart,” “As Good as It Gets,” “Jerry Maguire,” “Philadelphia,” “Platoon” and “Erin Brockovich.”
Backed by five of the major studios, Movielink debuted late last year.
