THX is getting into the vidgame business, launching a new certification program for audio and visual standards in games.
The George Lucas-founded company, best known for its booming intros to films, already certifies the audio and video systems of movie theaters, DVDs and other multimedia products. THX now will do the same thing for vidgames, establishing specifications to ensure consistently high levels of acoustic and visual quality throughout the development process.
“With sound and image quality becoming such critical elements to the success of videogame titles, the environments that games are created in must be built to the highest possible technical standards,” said Joseph Vogel, veep of business development at THX.
First company to sign on with THX is developer Electronic Arts, which will publish several games later this year with THX certification. Among them are the game based on “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” as well as “James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing” and “Medal of Honor: Rising Sun.”
