Cabler to offer 75% of primetime in HD
A high-definition edition of the Movie Channel will launch Dec. 1.
Channel, which will show all pics in widescreen format, will broadcast a selection of HD titles in December, including “Bandits,” “Novocaine” and “Rollerball.” About 75% of the channel’s primetime offerings will be available in true HD; remainder will be converted from the standard feed.
“Seven out of 10 potential buyers say that they would be more likely to purchase an HDTV set if they knew their favorite movies would be broadcast in HD,” said Mark Greenberg, exec VP of corporate strategy and communications for Showtime Networks. “We believe the Movie Channel HD will not only add significant value to our affiliates’ HDTV offerings but it will also provide a powerful addition to the Showtime Unlimited package.”
Showtime’s own HD edition was launched in 2000. Net was the first premium channel to offer an original series fully produced in HDTV in 2002 with “Odyssey 5.”
