“Daredevil” will be the first Fox film on the nascent D-VHS format to be released the same day as its DVD and video equivalents, debuting July 29.
The actioner, featuring Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, will be joined on store shelves by “Phone Booth” and “There’s Something About Mary,” both out in D-VHS versions on July 29 also.
In all, the new releases will bring to 20 the titles Fox has released for the D-VHS format, which uses a digital tape medium for high-definition video versions of movies.
Electronics maker JVC developed the format, which also can play regular VHS tapes, and debuted its first consumer playback deck in August. Since then, JVC also has created a “pro” line of the decks, with higher security protections, which it is selling to studios for use in distributing and reviewing digital dailies during film production.
