SPH stirs station by axing Yew

World Brief

Terrestrial TV station SPH MediaWorks axed CEO Lee Cheok Yew on Monday, a month before the station’s second anniversary.

The news surprised industryites. Despite teething problems, the broadcaster’s Chinese-lingo Channel U is doing well and won Channel of the Year kudos at the Asia TV Awards in December. SPH MediaWorks also won Asian Broadcaster of the Year for overall number of awards won.

SPH MediaWorks is backed by Singapore Press Holdings.

Wee Leong How, chairman of Times Periodicals, Singapore’s leading magazine publisher, will fill in until a new CEO is appointed.
