Evans told to pay up

More financial and legal woes for media entrepreneur

LONDON — Chris Evans, millionaire broadcaster-turned-producer, was told Monday he must pay £7 million ($11.4 million) in damages to his former employer Virgin Radio.

Evans, who made $116 million selling Virgin to Scottish Media Group, also lost his $14.3 million dismissal claim against the company in a high-profile court case last month after the court ruled he had broken the terms of his contract.

Claim was for share options lost after Evans was fired for failing to show up for his breakfast show for five days after a drinking binge in June 2001. He claimed to be ill but was photographed outside a pub with pop singer Billie Piper, now his wife.

The $11.4 million in damages includes $1.6 million toward court costs, which Evans has already paid, but excludes some $3.2 million for his own legal fees.
