Philippines raid targets vid piracy

Anti-crime task force nets huge haul

SYDNEY — In the biggest raid on video pirates in the Philippines, more than 300,000 DVDs, VCDs and CDs were seized in the Quiapo area of Manila.

The military-style operation involving 218 armed personnel from the Army’s anti-crime task force, the Presidential Security Group and the police Special Action Force was conducted at dawn on July 15. The results were revealed Wednesday by the Motion Picture Assn., whose reps collaborated with the Video Regulatory Board of the Philippines.

The MPA estimated piracy accounted for 80% of the market last year (up from 65% in 1999), resulting in annual losses of $30 million in potential income to the Hollywood majors.
