World Brief

ZDF topper Markus Schaechter has attacked commercial broadcasters lobby group VPRT after it demanded that government-funded pubcasters no longer be allowed to raise part of their finance from advertising.

Schaechter argued this would damage Germany’s dual system of public and private broadcasting. He accused VPRT of blaming pubcasters for the crisis at commercial webs caused by the slump in ad revs. That slump also affects ZDF; it will cost the web $100 million in its four-year budget until 2004.
