Breakfastcast up 50% in mid-July news sweeps

WPIX’s “WB11 Morning News” will tack on an extra hour of news this fall and broadcast into the 8-9 hour.

“There is a strong demand for news from 8-9 a.m., and I look forward to meeting that demand,” said Karen Scott, news director of the Tribune-owned WB affiliate.

Announcement marks the second time the newscast has expanded its broadcast since its launch in June 2000. Last fall, an extra half-hour was added to the earlycast, at 5:30 a.m.

At the halfway point of the July news sweeps, breakfastcast is off to a strong start. The latest Nielsen data shows its numbers are up 50% from same period last year. For the first time in six months, the “WB11 Mornings New” has overtaken its “Good Day New York” competish on Fox’s WNYW. And for more than 30 weeks, numbers have topped those of the “Early Show” broadcast on WCBS.

WPIX’s ayem news team includes anchors Lynne White and John Mueller and weather anchor Linda Church.
