Oz b’cast vet ousted

Portman exit part of restructuring plan

MELBOURNE — Australian Broadcasting Corp.’s vet comedy topper Geoff Portman has been forced out after a marathon 29 years with the pubcaster.

Portman presided over uber-hit comedy “Mother and Son” and recent series of “Backberner” and “The Games.”

Last year he infamously refused to green light sitcom “Kath and Kim,” which was eventually made through the drama department, screened to boffo auds and is inking strong sales offshore and ancillary.

His exit follows a restructure that will see narrative comedy programming moved to the drama department and non-narrative programming the responsibility of a yet-to-be appointed head of entertainment.
