NBC wins opening week

Morning Rating Flash - Rick Kissell

NBC closed out the opening week of the new season with a Sunday victory courtesy of its 8-11 p.m. drama lineup, which included solid premieres for the new “American Dreams” and “Boomtown” and the returning “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”

“American Dreams” led its hour in both adults 18-49 (4.5/12) and total viewers (13.3 million), according to prelim nationals from Nielsen, and “Law & Order: CI” (prelim 16 million, 5.0/11) kept the net on top at 9. The second-year crime drama was up more than 20% in key categories. And at 10, “Boomtown” will likely finish second to ABC’s “The Practice” in both 18-49 (prelim 4.9/12) and total viewers (13.6 million).

CBS, boosted by an NFL overrun, was second on the night. Its 8:30-11 p.m. movie “Mission: Impossible 2” failed to excite many (prelim 8.8m, 3.5/8 in A18-49), nor did Fox’s 7:30-10 p.m. movie “The Matrix” (prelim 8.0m, 3.4/8).

ABC will finish third on the night, although prelim nationals for the net are unreliable due to football preemptions in Minneapolis and Seattle. Net’s “Prince William” movie fared poorly (prelim 7 million, 2.0/6). “Alias” is projected to finish with roughly a 4.7 rating in adults 18-49, “The Practice” with a 5.3 — both off more than 20% from a year ago.
