Middle East nabs ‘Idols’ format

'SuperStar' to air on Future TV

LONDON — Beirut-based satellite channel Future TV has licensed hot reality format “Idols,” from FremantleMedia and 19TV for the Middle East.

The series, the first pan-regional version of the format, will be broadcast as “SuperStar” and will feature Arabic pop music performed by contestants from across the region.

Auditions will be held in The Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Thousands of contestants will be whittled down to 60 – 10 from each territory – but only 12 will perform songs live in front of a studio audience.

The 21-episode series will culminate in a live performance staged in the Lebanon. Future TV will produce the format locally, but FremantleMedia’s Sheldon Bailey will be the production consultant on the series.

A panel of four judges, from Egypt, the Lebanon and Kuwait, comprising some of the music industry’s most influential experts in the Middle East, will decide the fate of the wannabe idols in the early rounds. Series’ hosts will come from Egypt and Jordan.
