After net's 18, Fox Sports and KNBC close behind with 12

See nomineesFor the third straight year, Fox-owned KTTV nabbed more local Emmy nominations than any other L.A. station.

In picking up 18 noms Thursday, KTTV will be on the hunt for trophies in such categories as live coverage of an unscheduled event for its efforts following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The entire team behind its “Good Day L.A.” newscast was recognized for that morning’s work.

Nipping at KTTV’s heels, with 12 noms apiece, were sister station Fox Sports Net, one of the few cablers to get a nom, and Peacock-operated KNBC.

Next came new Viacom acquisition KCAL (11), new Spanish-lingo NBC purchase KVEA (nine), WB affil KTLA (eight), Univision flagship KMEX (six), Eye-owned KCBS (five) and UPN affil KCOP (five).

ABC O&O KABC routinely doesn’t submit entries, but it snapped up four noms, with some individuals sending in material on their own. PBS station KCET also received four noms.

Winners will be unveiled June 29 at the 54th annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards at the TV Academy’s Leonard H. Goldenson Theater.

Both L.A. Lakers announcer Chick Hearn and veteran broadcaster Pete Noyes will be singled out with the Los Angeles Governers Award.

In other categories, those up for Emmy honors in hard news reporting include KVEA’s Salvador Duran, KCBS’ Joel Grover and KTTV’s Aidan Pickering. Sports reporting noms went to KCAL team Brian Singer and Derrin Horton and KNBC’s Fred Roggin. News feature noms were presented to KCBS’ Mike Castellucci and Juan Renteria and KTTV’s Pickering, Chris Blatchford, Christine Devine and Susan Hirasuna.
