Italo watchdogs urge TV legislation

Dispatch

MILAN — Italian media watchdogs are urging legislation to end the television domination of pubcaster RAI and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s TV group Mediaset.

“We need new rules to allow new players to enter this market,” Communications Authority chairman Enzo Cheli said in his annual report last week.

The authority is probing the advertising revs of Mediaset and RAI, which together control more than 90% of the television market. The result of the inquiry is due in October but is unlikely to prompt real change, as the authority has no regulatory powers.
