Show to allow public to select a choice for 2004 election

President Bush may not seem interested in popular culture, but he might pay attention to the public’s obsession with reality TV — if only to size up possible competition.

FX recently said it was developing a reality skein that will allow the American public to pick a “people’s” candidate for the 2004 presidential election.

“The winner of ‘American Candidate’ will be a TV star with high name recognition,” documeister and show co-creator R.J. Cutler told Daily Variety.

“Like America itself, this project is a great experiment. We’ll see how America responds.”
