MIAMI — TV veteran Antonio Barreto becomes senior VP of programming and marketing at satcaster DirectTV Latin America today. Barreto fills the vacancy created when Milton Torres became executive VP, responsible for Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.
Before joining DirectTV Latin America, Barreto was senior VP and general manager of ESPN Intl., responsible for operations in Latin America.
He was also managing director for Telefonica Media Latin America, and alsoworked for Globo in Brazil for five years.
At DirecTV, Barreto will negotiate program acquisitions and on-air operations, along with defining the entertainment line-up for the region, and overseeing marketing.
He will also be responsible for market planning and product development, definition and promotion and the oversight of the World Cup operations.
DirecTV Latin America has exclusive rights to the cup in six Spanish-language territories, and is sublicensing some rights to broadcasters in those markets. It counts over 1.6 million subs throughout the region.
