Estes, Lee, Benben join pilots

'Brats,' 'Kingpin' among shows to get new castmembers

Rob Estes will command the lead in WB drama pilot “Brats,” while Sheryl Lee (“Twin Peaks”) and Brian Benben (“Dream On”) have joined NBC’s “Kingpin,” as networks continued casting pilots Thursday.

Here’s the latest:

  • Estes (“Melrose Place”) will star as Jack Briggs, a career Army man who returns home to his wife and kids after an 18-month tour of duty, in “Brats,” which Spelling Television is producing. Winifred Hervey wrote the hour and will exec produce with Aaron Spelling and E. Duke Vincent.

  • Lee will play the drug lord’s wife, Benben a seedy plastic surgeon and Angela Alvarado Rosa (TNT’s “Boss of Bosses”) a DEA agent in the Peacock pilot “Kingpin,” produced by Spelling Entertainment and NBC Studios. They join Steven Bauer, Ruben Carbajal and Yancey Arias, who already have been cast in major roles. David Mills is writing-exec producing the drug-trade drama and Allen Coulter (“The Sopranos”) is directing.

  • Chelsea Hobbs (“Pasadena”) and Keith Robinson (“ER”) will lead Fox’s “Save the Last Dance” as unlikely sweethearts Sara and Derek. Fox pilot, based on the hit feature of the same name, also will co-star Sam Sarpong (“Carmen: A Hip-Hopera”) as Malakai. Paramount Network Television is producing. Toni Ann Johnson, a scribe on the original pic, wrote the pilot and will exec produce. Robert Cort, David Madden and Dan Pyne also are on board as exec producers.

  • Alex Carter will play the father in ABC’s two-hour father-son archaeology drama pilot, tentatively titled “Veritas,” from Touchstone Television. He joins Ryan Merriman as son Nikko. Also cast on the project Thursday: Eric Balfour (“Six Feet Under”), as Calvin, a member of the exhibition team; Cobie Smulders as Juliette, Nikko’s 20-something tutor; and APA-repped Arnold Vosloo (“The Mummy”) as team member Vincent. Patrick Massett and John Zinman are writing-exec producing, while Bryan Spicer is director-exec producer and Craig Zadan and Neil Meron also are exec producing.
