Lead Actress - Drama

Jennifer Garner

Series: “Alias”

Years on show: 1

Emmy pedigree: First nomination

Episode submitted: “Truth Be Told”

2001-02 shining moment: Going from a virtual unknown to cover girl to potential network savior in one season.

Pro: Emmy voters who mark their ballots for someone other than butt-kicking agent Sidney Bristow better make sure their health insurance is paid up. Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. didn’t take any chances and gave Garner the actress Golden Globe.

Con: Voters who enjoy the show may not take her seriously enough as a dramatic actress.

Quotable: “I just can’t wait to see this woman evolve. I’m such a fan of the person J.J. (Abrams) writes. I’d like to see her come to terms with her father. I’d like to see her date someone without killing him.”

Critical viewpoint: “I can’t think of any actor, male or female, who seemed to have more fun in a role. For what that series is, that’s crucial. She played it straight but she brought this whole sense of fun and adventure to it. When she’s on the screen, you’ve got to watch her. It was that kind of performance.” Bill Goodykoontz, the Arizona Republic
