2001-02 shining moment: The family gatherings when Ruth would gather her kids together at the dinner table and ask them to become more open about their daily lives.
Pro: As Conroy blossomed on the show, so could her Emmy chances.
Con: With two nominees from “Six Feet Under,” Conroy and Rachel Griffiths may split the vote and open the door for someone else. That’s what happened two years ago when Sela Ward (“Once and Again”) topped Lorraine Bracco and Edie Falco from “The Sopranos.”
Quotable: “Ruth was slammed in the face with a terrible incident, and then you find that her marriage was half-dead anyway. She’s a woman who’s frozen in place. . . Now she’s trying to see what step to take next to make her life make sense.”
Critical viewpoint: “What is interesting to see is at the outset she was a superficial, frail sort of caricature. Her growth, while not always positive, has been a lot of fun to watch. She’s a very interesting pinwheel for a lot of different characters to play off of while still standing out on her own.” Mark McGuire, the Times Union in Albany, N.Y.
