Everybody Loves Raymond

Network: CBS

Showrunner: Phil Rosenthal

Total noms: 11

Emmy pedigree: The “Raymond” women have fared well, with Patricia Heaton winning the last two years for lead actress and Doris Roberts in 2001 for supporting. The show is winless after being nommed the last three years.

2001-02 Nielsen ranking: No. 6; 20 million viewers

Pro: As the anchor of CBS’ winning Monday lineup, many believe that “Raymond” has been the most laugh-out-loud sitcom of the past few years and deserves to be recognized by the TV Acad with a best series honor.

Con: “Raymond” is more of an old-school comedy and voters looking for more cutting-edge fare might lean toward “Curb” or “Sex and the City.”

On “Raymond’s” simplicity: “We’re not a ripped-from-the-headlines type of show. We just deal with normal stuff and feel this is what endures,” says Rosenthal.

Critical viewpoint: “They have been the unsung sitcom for many years. It’s working on all cylinders right now.” Marc Peyser, Newsweek

“There’s been no show more consistent than ‘Raymond.’ What other shows dares to be G-rated some weeks? It succeeds in not trying to be edgy and hip.” Matt Roush, TV Guide
