Rockin’ time on ladies night

Benefit helps breast cancer research

Lifetime’s third annual “Women Rock! Girls & Guitars” concert for breast cancer was a mellow event Thursday at the Kodak Theater. The concert was sandwiched between a cocktail party at the theater and apres bash at the nearby Highlands, both incredibly crowded.

Lifetime CEO Carole Black started the evening with some sobering stats about breast cancer and highlighted the cancer survivors in the audience before all the performers — Michelle Branch, Gloria Estefan, Chrissie Hynde, Chaka Khan and Lee Ann Womack — got the crowd to its feet with “I’m Every Woman.”

They didn’t stay standing for long though once the producer asked people in the section in front of the TelePrompTer not to block it.

Emceed by Jennifer Love Hewitt, the evening featured individual perfs as well as appearances by Rosanna Arquette, Dana Delany and Fran Drescher, herself a cancer survivor who said poignantly that while she wouldn’t wish the disease on her worst enemy, “Some of the best gifts come in the ugliest packages.”

After-party at Highlands was an SRO crush. Marie Claire magazine co-sponsored the concert, which will air on Lifetime on Oct. 25.
