‘Gangster’ ready to bow, see?

Paul McGuigan-helmed ultra-violent pic unspools

IFC Films “Gangster No. 1” opened like gangbusters at its premiere in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

Pic screened earlier this year as part of the “Malcolm McDowell: Insolent Angel” retrospective at the Walter Reade Theater in Gotham (Daily Variety, 5/30/2002). At the event, McDowell was quoted as saying, “I had a six-minute monologue to an empty chair, which is why I took the part ….And the fucker cut the scene.”

Pic’s stars, including Malcolm McDowell and Paul Bettany, were out in support of their project, and attended the film’s afterparty. Guests included Steve Tisch and Leelee Sobieski.
