Yiannis Gionakis, thesp known for playing the goofy hero of Greek black-and-white comedies, died of a respiratory infection Aug. 25. He was 80.

Born in Athens, Gionakis studied medicine but soon turned to acting, starting a career in film an onstage that spanned more than 40 years.

Although he acted in many serious roles, Gionakis was known to most Greeks for his appearances in 1960s comedies, typically as a dimwitted character.
