Robert ‘Bob’ Wernet

TV newsman, press secretary for ex- Gov. Ariyoshi

Former Honolulu television newsman Robert “Bob” Wernet, who was press secretary for former Gov. George Ariyoshi, died of cancer Sunday July 20 at his home in Maryland. He was 60.

Wernet served two years in the Peace Corps in the Philippines before coming to Hawaii in 1966. He worked as a broadcast journalist at KHVH-TV, now KITV, and at KGMB-TV.

He later became press secretary for Ariyoshi and former Rep. Patricia Saiki.

Wernet also worked as a special projects administrator for the East-West Center and public affairs adviser to the administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

He was a correspondent on the battleship USS Missouri’s final voyage from Bremerton, Wash., to Pearl Harbor in 1998.
