Musician and academic Marvin Paymer, father of actor David Paymer and writer-actor Steve Paymer, died June 14 of cancer in San Diego. He was 81.
Born and reared in New York City, he worked as a musician in his teens with such luminaries as Louis Armstrong. Paymer received his Ph.D. from CUNY Graduate Center and taught at Hunter and York Colleges in New York City.
He was known in music academic circles for his scholarly works on 18th century composer Giovanni Pergolesi, serving as co-founder of the Pergolesi Research Center at CUNY from 1977-93.
In addition to David and Steve, he is survived by wife Edythe; another son, Jon Lach; a daughter, Madeleine Kessner; and seven grandchildren.
Family suggests donations in Paymer’s name be made to the Wellness Community in West Los Angeles at 310-314-2555.
