Actress known for roles in Mike Leigh films

Actress Katrin Cartlidge, best known for her roles in British director Mike Leigh’s films, died over the weekend in London from complications of pneumonia and septicemia. She was 41.

She was recently cast in the upcoming U Focus pic “21 Grams” to be directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and starring Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts.

Noted for her eclectic and often daring role choices and for working with directors early in their careers, she appeared in such films as Leigh’s “Naked,” “Career Girls” and “Topsy Turvy”; this year’s best foreign-film Oscar winner by Danis Tanovic, “No Man’s Land”; Lars von Trier’s “Breaking the Waves”; Milcho Manchevski’s Oscar-nommed “Before the Rain,” which won the Golden Lion in Venice in 1994; and Lodge Kerrigan’s “Clare Dolan.”

London native did hundreds of readings at the Royal Court and performed at the National in “Apart From George” and “Boy Meets Girl.”

She began her nonstage career on the Channel 4 soap “Brookside” in 1982 and stayed with the show six years. Most recently, she played Katerina Ivanovna in BBC2’s adaptation of “Crime and Punishment.”

Cartlidge won best cinema actress in the Evening Standard Awards for 1997’s “Career Girls.”

She is survived by her parents, sister, brother and partner Peter.
